| Mikko | Re: So.... Mike, Personally I *just* don't know yet...perhaps I'll go with the CTS. (I don't have the whole set of them here now.) They sure have affect on tone. What about those alpha tolerances compared to CTS? Btw, kinda off topic, but these clips are made with alphas except the treble as CTS pot. http://www.kolumbus.fi/fractal.wonderland/heavy_mids.mp3 http://www.kolumbus.fi/fractal.wonderland/heavy_otherwise.mp3 Sorry I've no comparable clips made with the whole set of CTS pots, but perhaps later. I like the sound in both clips very much even they are more made for my ultra linear unaesthetical testing purposes...kinda extreme tones, in a way that the first clip has all mids set to 10 and the other clip has all mids set to 0. Ok, back to our topic again...both Alpha and CTS pots sure have nice sturdy feel when dialing, but I still have to say that the best tones I've ever got out was with some cheap crappy pots I used all the time previously...I actually measured the cheap ones and they were like 430-450k instead of 500k and 850-870k instead of 1Meg. Also I don't know how "logarithmic" they actually were and which scale they supposed to have but they also worked very nicely on the ground side, geez.. Now when thinking about those higain circuits having those 1000pF caps across 1meg or 500k gain pots...using the lower value pot there kinda smoothens the tone and calms down the gain a bit too. Right in places like that I loved using my old crappy pots. I really got schocked at first and worked my ass off when trying to recreate some sounds with new alphas! I tried everything from adding resistors to different places on the pot all the way to trying various split plate loads when reducing the gain - nothing worked perfectly. Think I don't go back to those cheap ones though, somehow I don't trust them...they were made for PCB and also they didn't have any "professional" tension feel when rotating the knob, or maybe the first 1/4 turn have some but then next 1/4 don't etc! Whew...whenever I start work with new amp I'll sure place the pots there as the very first thing. Mikko |
