| LFOscalator | Re: Interesting theoretical question An interesting experiment would be to make an SS guitar amp with an output transformer that would have an impedance ratio of 1:1. McIntosh Labs is doing something similar to this in their top of the line SS hi-fi amp called the MC1201 which uses an "OUTPUT AUTOFORMER" to transfer power from the transistors to the speaker. The transformer is primarily used for it's audio qualities rather than matching capabilities. In other words, the amp could have easily been designed without the transformer for all practical purposes, but the design engineers choose to insert a transformer in the circuit simply to take advantage of it's pleasing sound. Maybe Mac is onto something. LFO |
