replacing ez81 ?

gazzareplacing ez81 ?
Hi,

I've got a agin ez81 which is still working but I was thinking of getting a spare with the next order of other tubes i get. BUT the prices are quite high for a rectifier, and it doesn't seem that anyone is making new ones.

so, since i quite like the soft compression from a tube recfifier (in a 18W el84 clone) it is worth trying to use an easier to get tube ?
whould this mean an octal tube ?
or should I try and fake the soft retifier with a resistor + silicon ?

any help / advice please ! I don't really have a clue.

ta,

Gareth.
