If that idea doesn't work, and in case you haven't already considered this...... you can always use a FET Optocoupler (ie H11F1) like Laney and others do to switch a fixed resistor in and out of the volume control section in a preamp stage. To power the H11F1, you'd have to set up a + or -15V (or so) power source, and then remotely toggle it via a footswitch. The optocoupler ensures no preamp hum induced due to the footswitch cable.
