To negate the possibility of the bias voltage failing add a larger resitor say 2-5 times the MV value and connect between the wiper and the bias node point. I have experienced a similar problem with the bias driven tremolo ccts, I usually add a 1M resistor (across the 250K pot in a Fender)to ensure bias is always present. Another way would to feed the signal from the splitter into the wiper of the MV pot, then bias will remain intact. I don't know what this configuration would sound like though.
