Here is one trick that has worked well for me:  
 
Radio Shack has 50PIV, 6A rectifier diodes for $2.00/3 pack (IIRC). Take two of these and wire them "back to back" parallel. Then insert them on one side of your filament string.  
 
This provides a constant (i.e. independent of current draw) voltage drop of 0.7 volts. It's cheap, parts are easy to obtain, and it doesn't build up any heat.
