Maybe my postings were a bit unclear , sorry !  
The plexi/bassmen don't have such circuit , "just a regualr LTP" , when you do dime such amp the 1st thing you do hear distorting is that phase-inverter and the output-tubes just do add a little color .  
In some amps ( Ampeg SVT , Ken Gilbert's BIG amp , Fender PS300 ) the outputtubes are driven by a low impedance output driver or a transformer . In such amps you can really overdrive the output-tubes , when overdriven the output-tubes wanna draw some grid-current and such drivers can do that .
