I should've implied pedals that were still in production, as opposed to pedals being made by the original manufacturer. However, in my limited experience, a number of FX that have been sold to other manufacturers, or otherwise "reissued" don't seem to sound as good (to me) as originals. Some do sound good, some different. It can be subjective. I agree with your legality argument. In the age of the internet, a lot of people ignore or don't have any knowledge of copyright laws, and why they exist. Personally, I tend to build stuff I can't buy.
