I can't for the life of me come up with a simple and valid explanation: but for the moment look at it this way: a 110V primary has half the number of turns than a 220V one, and if you apply 220V to it, double the current will flow, which it's not designed for, and that overheats the primary-winding.
I will probably get flamed for this over-simplified "explanation", but I can take that, as long you don't set fire to anything or electrocute yourself!
