The +9V is really -9V, red wire to ground. Make sure that's right.  
If you aren't sure how to orient the transistor, make sure before you solder. It's EBC as you read the part number (search for "2n3906 datasheet"), so flat side to the bottom edge of the PCB. The arrow is the emitter.

My guess is your offboard wiring is wrong. The Ge tranny is easy to kill with the soldering iron too.  
 
The easyface is actually harder to build than a fuzz face :).
