The headroom is a less than 9V, I think 15db is 32:1, so your input is 0.3V peak-to-peak you have clipping. If you have a gain control you can match your preamp to the instrument output.  
It's hard to stay clean with a gain of 10 with a lot of pickups, on a 9V supply.
