I tried the Hot British, and, while it had amazing tone sculpting capabilities, the distortion was way more into the butt-rock metal family than I can ever use. No doubt IC chips are heavily involved in the signal path. The Varidrive is nice; especially with a 12AU7 tube. Configured that way, it's what a TS-808 would want to sound like when it grew up. I kinda prefer preamps with 2 tubes instead of just one. I find that by layering multiple stages of mild overdrive (instead of trying to achieve the desired tone in just one stage) that I get a much more pleasing, lush, dimensional, touch-sensitive, detailed, and subtle tone. I'm happy with my Peavey TG Raxx (sans clipping diodes) with a Mullard 12AX7 and a chinese 12AX7. 'Course it's not a floor model. Doesn't even offer a footswitch. I recon H&K's products would probably be a sure bet, as far as off-the-shelf products go. Likely, folks here would tell you to build your own and would offer links, too... |
