| Darin | Re: Taming Tweedy Bass Hi Guys, I have noticed a significant reduction in the muddy bass in my 5E3 by changing out the preamp tubes. By changing out the EH 12AY7 in V1 to a 5751 (not sure if this is recommended?), this significantly brighten the tone. Much less muddy. I also changed out the JJ ECC83 to a vintage RCA 7025 out of my SFTR. This change makes the tone very sparkly and chimey. These changes also seem to make the volume and overdrive characteristics much more linear. In the original configuration (12AY7 & ECC83) it seemed to reach max output (volume) at around 3 on the volume (for bright channel). Any setting between 3 and about 10 seemed to do nothing. Between 10 and 12, the overdrive saturates a little more. My point is that you can change the bass characteristics by change tubes. |
