| SpeedRacer | Re: Useless Comet info (long) Brilliant! Enjoyed every word.. and my best buddy and driving compadre in HS moved out to AZ and found hisownself a Maverick with a 302 & a Tri-mac (sp) 3 speed stick. (That was a stock config!) I think it was a 73? I forget.. He moved back for a while and we used to go out & whup on anything that ran, passing people on the outside (drifting of course, the suspension was not up to snuff exactly) and kicking sand on the anemic Z-28's and other sporty cars of the day in the traditional stoplight drag. The car was so tough too.. he rolled it down a cliff in AZ during a snowstorm in the mountains, there were some dings and a cracked windshield to show for that. When the wrecker showed up, he towed Todd's car back up to the road, and Todd got in, started it and drove back home. And later drove back to NY. I learned to drive stick in that car (post accident).. Try that in a Toyota. AFA build quality, I think the body work has come a long way to get better now, but the mechanicals have gone downhill. On the older Mustangs etc, the doors don't fit well, the fenders are on sliding nuts (so you can "make them fit" etc. When we used too restore them, it was tough to get those "credit card" door gaps the show guys want BC the cars were never that good in reality.. It took a lot of massaging and, well, body filler. The one at the Ford museum is a great example of what they really looked like. |
