Re: I appreciate the many variables you mention...
I do agree with Dave. FM maybe important, but speaker distortion is problably more important than many people realize.

Just to give another example:

I've got a small, solid state Washburn amp that I use for practice. It sounds surprisingly good for what it is and what it costs. The built-in speaker is very inefficient and distorts A LOT. If I disconnect it and plug on of my bigger cabinets (closed 1x12 or closed 4x12) it sounds much LOUDER, but the tone is completely lost! By the FM argument it should sound better as it's louder, but it's just the opposite - I miss the smaller speaker distortion.

Also, many people think that speakers are linear and they start distorting when you start to hear it buzzing. Speakers are not linear, they distort a lot with even very quiet sounds, specially at low frequencies. When it starts buzzing it's because it's really getting destructed, but it was distorting much before. If you've got a 100W speaker that has ~3% THD @ 100Hz, 1W and ~90% THD at 100Hz, 100W, consider it a very good hi-fi speaker!
