| Shea | Aiken's article is all you need I just finished building an amp with star grounding, and it's so quiet it's eery. I followed the recommendations in Randall Aiken's article the best I could. I didn't get isolated jacks - the guy from whom I ordered most of my parts thought there would be some kind of problem, maybe that they wouldn't fit side by side in my chassis. So, I used one of the mounting screws for the power tranny as the power stage ground point, and one of the input jacks as the preamp star point. For each point, I twisted the ends of the wires together, soldered them, crimped on a mounting lug, and then heated the lug with a 100 watt soldering gun. One lug is screwed down to the chassis with one of the power tranny mounting nuts, and the other is put between the input jack and the chassis like a washer. The common lead from the output tranny is connected right to the sleeve terminal on one of the speaker jacks. I also followed Aiken's tips for connecting related grounds together before going to the star point - i.e., grounds from a filter cap, pot, and preamp tube cathode might be connected together at one point on the board, and one wire from that point runs to the star point. A better name might be "tree grounding." Shea |
