I thought it was my own error too. Then I did it up again, with the same wire, and it started smoking and melting again. I replaced all the solid stuff with stranded, PVC-shielded wire, and there was no problem. Pretty nice stuff I got from Handmade Electronics.  
 
One thing I did to check my work was to divide the wiring up into groups of 2 or three tubes, and make temporary connections to the pilot light to see how they worked. Small groups of tubes worked fine with the solid wire, but when I wired up the whole thing, it melted. Maybe I just got lousy wire, but it came from a source whom I trust - I won't name him, because I don't think he's at fault for anything.
