Exactly what are you referring to as "DT hacking?" The function I'm talking about is Fender's own design, and it doesn't involve any cutting. I also think the purists who get all in a tizzy about the push-pull knob and actually open up the amp to remove it are a little silly - if you don't like it, leave the knob pushed in! Duh! So, its "tweaking a little bit" if you're a vintage freak/purist, but "DT hacking" if you're not. Also, I have trouble believing that the '79s boost doesn't do anything to increase the power. The sound it produces has a big component of 6v6 overdrive to it - and it's clean with the volume at 4 or lower.
