With the ticking, I can't help you. My Musicman used to do that too.  
 
As far as the tone stack / volume thing, that's normal for the blackface/silverface family of circuits. When the tone knobs are turned all the way down, then the mids and lows comming through the .1 and .047 caps are sent entirely to ground. The treble knob would be turned all the way over to the low/mid side and away from the 250pf treble cap, so it won't be picking up anything. The channel volume knob gets the signal from the treble knob, so it won't get anything. Bottom line, I'm surprised you hear anything with the tone knobs turned all the way down. I'm also surprised that the normal channel isn't doing it too - maybe it doesn't have a midrange pot?
