I think you are talking about the memory backup caps, sometimes called "gold caps" becuase thats the brand name of one company's offering.  
 
They are not suitable for filtering duty at all. They have very high ESR and are slow to charge and discharge. They are suitable for maintaining a backup voltage to low-power CMOS real time clocks and memory chips that only draw a few ma.  
 
If you want to go bonkers with big-ass caps, get some of those humonguous electrolytics that the car stereo guys use. Be careful though, they pack a whallop when charged, and when discharged look like a very big dead-short circuit.
