Absolutely correct - "last for decades" is a good way to think of it. The caveats about proper/careful biasing and signal levels are important ones, as you're well aware.  
 
The life you can expect from a tube goes down *every time* the tube delivers more than the rated cathode current, and runs with high glass temperatures.  
 
Unfortunately, the things that seem to produce the tone guitarists want are almost in diametric opposition to the long life scenarios. The commonest comment my amp tech friend gets when someone brings in a burnt out hulk for repair is "Gee, it sounded great just before it blew out. Can you make it sound that way all the time?"
