What is worse, is that old amps can have several separate and distinct faults (hum, noisey pots, valve blown) & the customer only notices
 
 
 
 
Good point. My amp (hifi) is cutting out intemittently, and I couldnīt find it. Repairperson says thereīs nothing wrong, because the amp worked just fine for hours in his shop. Two days later; boom, cut out again.  
 
Finally narrowed it down to a speaker-protection circuit with a mind of itīs own (Hey, Iīm bored, letīs protect the speaker from absolutely nothing!)
