I did this too, though I used a 1-ohm 1% resistor  
 
in series with the cathode (with test leads running out  
 
of the side of the case). A really easy way to do this  
 
is to take an old octal relay ($1 at my local surplus  
 
place), pull out the relay guts, drill a hole in the  
 
top for the socket, and run the wires. My total cost  
 
was less than $3 and it works great. (You could put  
 
the resistor in series with the plate to avoide reading  
 
the screen current, but be careful of those HOT test  
 
leads sticking out!)
