| Trace | Re: Variac for more voltage or less? I have two Marshalls that I converted to plexis (they are '74 and '75'...,metal faced) and did some other tweaks to. There a tunes on an album I recorded where I only used these Marshalls. You can get "rub against" that kind of gain and tone if the voltage is flying in and around the low 400's. Which I think is basically where his voltage was with the variac (Check out the link Speed posted and do the math...I think that's about right but I'm not the math guy...wish I was! ha, ha) The tunes on the recording I made did not have the .68uF cap across the 820ohm cathode resistor on pin#3 of V2 (now they do and there's A LOT more Van Halen #1 gain) Go to ----> http://asitis.net Click on "Sound Clips" and there are MP3's of about 5 tunes. Download "All I Need" or "Say It Again." These are the Marshall amps I used. Again, all the mod stuff was AFTER I recorded the tunes. The "plexi" amps DO have more gain than the amps I used due to the .68uF cap I mentioned earlier. There are other things I did to make the amps sound "browner" after I recorded those tunes. I'm more happy with the amp's now than before for what ever it's worth. The other tunes have different amps I modded or built. Take a listen as see what you guys think. Again, that kind of gain can be gotten from a plexi with especially if it's running full out but you also have to consider the power tube distortion and the speaker break up into this equation.
