Isn't there a way to lower the voltage when a bridge rectifier is used. I seem to remember seeing that in one of Kevin O'Connors books. It was just a zener between the rectifier and the first filter cap. Of course you wouldn't be able to use the chassis as a heatsink in this case, but what if you mount the zener on a separate heatsink isolated from the chassis?
