| CJ Landry | Re: Tel Ray, or Can reverb/phase shifters I have repaired a few of the oil can Morley delay units. I had the opportunity to open on eof the cans up a few weeks ago and found exactly what RG mentions. There is a rotating disk inside the can. Mounted parallel with this rotating disk is a stationary disk that the 3 brushes mount on and look like a rectangle (.5" x .375") rubber strip. I beleive the material to be a of a carbon origin. Facing the inside of the open can, the left most brush should be the input signal from the pre amp of the delay. The rotating disk spins in a CCW motion, so this brush charges the disk. The Right most brush is the delayed output signal that picks up the charge. The middle brush must discharge the disk and then the process starts over. There is a little fluid in the bottom of the can and if the unit is not squeaking, I would not mess with it. I have used about 2 teaspoons of brake fluid and this stopped the squeak, however I found , on one of the delay units, the right most brush was torn and barely hanging on. There was signal at the left most brush but nothing at the output because of the destroyed brush. Needless to say I could not fix it because I do not know what this material is or where to find it. If you do not have signal at the input to the can, you can scope for this on the outside of the can, then the pre amp prior to it is not doing its job. I would not open the can if I did not have to. Good Luck, CJ |
