fetRe: Pedals vs. Processor (long)
I had a Boss programmable multiprocessor for awhile: a terrific Satriani-like heavy-sustain lead tone was available if you turned everything on at once - the advantage, of course, was that only one foot-tap turned on eight effects! But that was the only thing this unit did well; 99 mediocre sounds and one good one...

The other problem was, I found myself looking for reasons to use it! Tunes that I played just fine sans effects now were loaded down with fast chorus, slow chorus, slapback, slapback plus reverb plus fast chorus... ad infinitum.

I'd buy another multiprocessor if I could count on 10 really great preset sounds, rather than 128 mediocre ones. But for now, a Crybaby into a Rat II seems to work for just about every style of American pop/rock/funk/blues/country I'm ever likely to play...
