I'm not saying these various types of resistors sound 100% identical, but...  
 
 
 
There are many great-sounding amps out there that use carbon-film or metal-film resistors. Factors such as the circuit, tubes, and speakers have a lot more to do with whether or not an amp sounds warm or too bright and brittle than the type of resistors used.  
 
 
 
I have several blackface Fenders which have been completely recapped and have had most of the resistors replaced with film-types (also they have some minor mods to improve midrange response). Rather than sounding harsh, I think there's some extra clarity and transparency to the tone that I enjoy.
