| Farrow | Re: Old Tube TV--Salvage oppurtunities Actually, I have a few different designs -- but the one I use in my rig is extremely simple. It's a pentode set up as a voltage amp, with the screen tied to the plate load resistor through a 1M linear pot. Then there's a 1M audio pot off the plate as a master volume control. A "Brilliance" switch selects between three different coupling caps on the output. So it's not much help as a buffer (fairly high Zout) but it's killer as a preamp for overdriving your tube amp. The 6AK5 isn't really remarkable-sounding. It's really more a low-watt power tube and it wouldn't be my 1st choice as a preamp. I like the 6AG5 -- it's pretty raunchy. The sharp-cutoff pentodes are a lot dirtier sounding than some of the remote-cutoff guys. I'll dig up my notes later on... Farrow http://surf.to/pharaohamps |
