newby one... about hum in amp

JohnC	newby one... about hum in amp how much hum would be considered acceptable in a valve amp? (I can't compare my amp with any other right now) Pots turned (Vol and Master) all way up, is quite more than audible... at least standing near the amp/cabinet. In any other position of the pots, even on that one, of course, the sound of my instrument masks completely that hum, but my doubt is: if there is a "general silence" on stage is it suposed to be obliged for the musicians to offer a free "hum concert" to the audience without running all at once to lower the vol pots of their amps? Any tricks?
