I seem to remember someone saying that these amps were biased somewhere in the range of 80mA/tube. If this isn't class A it's mighty close. To be class A, both tubes must be conducting the full duration of the applied signal. It doesn't matter how that cat gets skinned; be it fixed or cathode biased. Because the class terms get abused a lot doesn't mean that this amp isn't class A.  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Actually Class A is more like 10% efficient. Class AB at best is only about 30% efficient. And that's running the tube pretty close to class B.
