Sounds like you might have dirty contacts on  
 
the input socket. Any resistance between the  
 
ground of the guitar lead and the ground of  
 
the socket will produce noise all by itself.  
 
The signal may be weak and even fluctuate.  
 
 
 
Give it a clean - it's worth a shot.
