Did he run a ground wire from the pickup cover, if he did not I can't see how it would have any effect on the tone unless the copper foil is grounded through the height adjustment screws or elsewhere. I have heard of using copper foil, but not letting the ends of the foil touch each other, (leaving a gap between the start and finish). I've never tried this but it seems to make sense. Charlie
