I like to use a compressor to switch between rythm and lead. I use it backwards from most players however. Try setting up your lead tone/volume with the compressor bypassed, then set your rythm volume by turning on the compressor and adjusting the compression, tone and output level. I like to do it this way because the rythm sound stays low, constant, background and present due to the compression effect, but the lead sound is loud, dynamic, expressive, and rich.
