| Mark Hammer | Re: electrolytic capacitors You need to make the question more specific. Where would you use it in the tone circuit? As a replacement for the usual .02 or .05uf tone cap?? If so, several things to consider: 1) VERY hard to find electrolytic caps in that value range; somewhat easier once you get over 0.1uf, but at that point they start detracting from the tone, not helping to shape it. 2) Why would you WANT a big tone cap? Personally, I find the stock values of .02 - .05 way too high, so I'm not sure what one would gain by using a larger value than that. Having said that, if your tone pot was a large enough value to effectively remove the cap from circuit (e.g., 1meg), and you placed two electrolytics end to end to make a non-polarized cap, then I suppose you COULD use them to have a choice of a ridiculously muted sound. Finally, they would not add a lot of bass. Rather, they would take away virtually all the treble and middle. There are other opinions, but my own is that this would sound terrible. |
