| david | Re: Is classic'57 a good pickup for lespauls?-long i have a les paul classic that had the 500t ceramic pickups in it when i bought it. they were very bright and hot. they worked well for rock if i plugged into a non master volume amp like my pro reverb. these pickups easily overdrive that amp. i replaced those pickups with the 57 classics and i think they are better. they are not as hot, and do have a ton of high end, but are balanced. they sound a lot like dicky betts in my opinion. they seem to be really responsive to hieght adjustments. at first i had them too close to the strings and i thought they were harsh. lowering them a bit helped a lot. I have SD 59's in a hammer and i think they sound like a caracature of the "best" pickup SD could find- not at all bad, but like steve said above, the way these pickups are eq'ed they impart their own tone. the bridge is hot and has pronounced mids, while the neck has much less mids- and sounds almost clean when switching from the bridge to the neck. i really agree with Steve A above, my les paul (57 classics) through a peavy sounds awful, bland and thin (other guitars do not) but through a twin or pro reverb it sounds very good. The hammer with the SD pickups sounds good through the peavey, and not quite as good through the other vintage amps. the difference between amps is more noticeable with the 57 classics. david |
