Les Paul said that the Deluxe was supposed to be the top of the line "tuxedo" model. When Gibson sent him his complementary Deluxe in '54 he immediately whipped the pickups out to put in his own, and found to his horror that it did not have a maple top. The Gold Top already had a maple top and it was too late to re-tool the Deluxe production line.
