JLR	Re: carved tops A method I used on a mandolin is to draw a pattern on your stock ( F-5) .Then draw progressively smaller patterns inside the original. Think of an elevation map.Now drill holes along the lines to the depth you want to carve to.Out side lines deepest getting shallower as you get to the center.this takes away a lot of wood and gives you a depth pattern to follow as you carve. this is for the top surface of course.Hope this makes sense to ya.
