| Legba | Re: Neck pocket to big... I read an article several years ago in Guitar Player that had a fix for a sloppy neck pocket. Basically, they wrapped a single layer of saran wrap around the neck and sprayed it with mold release compound, also put a layer of saran wrap on the neck pocket and sprayed with mold release compound, then mixed up some 2-part epoxy (not the 5-minute kind, the longer setting kind) and put it in the neck pocket on top of the saran wrap and reassembled the neck with the body. You also have to remember to spray the bolts with mold release compound before you put them in and tighten them. So you set up your guitar the way you want it, and the epoxy squeezes out of the joint but since you've got two big pieces of saran wrap that it's sandwiched between it's not going to get on anything. Then you let it harden overnight and disassemble the neck from the body, hopefully the bolts come out and the epoxy shim comes out OK. Trim the edges of the epoxy shim with a file or whatever and take off the plastic wrap. You've got a gap-free, airtight neck joint. You may want to try to find the original article in the library just to make sure I didn't leave out any helpful hints on preventing the epoxy from sticking to the bolts or whatever. Hope this helps! -Legba |
