I'm really going to have to write this down somewhere to do a cut and paste *laugh* I posted this once on PlexiPalace bbs, and someone else replied to it, basically agreeing with me, and the whole thread mysteriously disappeared hmmm.
short form story:: A guy brought me a 50watt plexi reissue, and a mercury magnetics OT. I had an OEI 50Watt OT here for another project, so I had some fun. First, I set the bias in the amp, wrote down what i biased it to., then played it thru the original Drake OT.... all tone knobs around 12:00, bright channel only, with the gain at about 2:00 IIRC. The tone was mushy, lacked all clarity, and quite frankly didnt sound like a REAL plexi in the least. I then swapped in the OEI model, and rebiased to the same dissipation. all of a sudden th tone was more 'open' it compressed nicely, buty didnt mush out, nor did it have the buzzy top end, a very balanced tone... VERY much like the original '68 plexi I played a month before. I then swapped in the guy's Mercury Magnetics OT. it DID soudn better than the Drake, but it sounded more like a '70's tranny, it got mushy, not as muhc as the Drake, but still didnt have the 'punch' of the OEI model. The MM also had this pervasive top end presenc that was harsh to my ears (btw, I was using NOS Mullard tubes thruout the amp, to test the amp to a more 'authentic' tone). Point is, the OEI tranny was the best performer all around. and as a kicker, I got it for half of what the guy paid for the Mercury Magnetics job.

It will get you at least 90% there if not 100% there! Although, you say you have a Superlead, i'm assuming 100watts? OEI doenst have a 100watt odel yet, only a 50watter.

Which brings me to another point... you have a '71 100 watter, and your reissue was a 50 watter, (or vice versa) you WILL hear a big difference.. the 100watters and 50 watters had drastically different OT's, and that is why the rissue may have sounded better to you (i can esp. see this if the '71 is a 50 watter, and the reissue wa a 100 watter) I"m not bagging Mercury Magnetics, because the workmanship of their OT was top notch, but they didnt have the detail that the OEI one did. Their prices seem a bit high for their power trannys and OT's, but ironically, they offer a choke coil for marshalls at less than what Korg USA was selling their's for
