| DCH | Bassman head: pentode/triode and M.Vol good ideas? Looking for "good idea/bad idea" input here, and you're the guys to give it! I've got a heavily modded Bassman AA156 head (now carrying a 5F6A circuit courtesy of Doug Hoffman's board, with an extra switchable gain stage via the 4th 12AX7) which currently has a master volume in the position suggested by Doug in his high gain mod, which places it after the EQ and going into the PI. This works (and I've got it bypassable, so I run without it in non-high gain mode anyway), but I'm really sold on the Matchless style master volume which sits after the PI at the input to the power tubes -- after the caps, but right before the 1.5K resistors going into grids. Any reason I shouldn't change my Bassman's MV to this position? While I've got you, I also like the look of the pentode/triode switching (or "fake triode") as described by Kevin O'Connor in The Ultimate Tone. It looks straightforward enough -- any reason I shouldn't add it to this Bassman? Any secrets I should know about when I do? Thanks in advance for any help available. All the best, Dave Hunter |
