| Jim S. | Re: .22 Caliber Mids Years ago, I owned a .22 caliber with graphic EQ. I grew to hate it. The clean channel was noisy and lacked headroom. Even with the preamp volume set to only 3 (and master set low), single coil guitars would crunch a bit on chords or notes that were picked hard. The lead channel was oversaturated with too much mids -- even with preamp volume on 2 it was complete "violin city". The stock speaker was nasal sounding. The amp was very bass shy without the graphic EQ. I quickly gave up the idea of modding the amp when I discovered that the circuit board was installed with components all on the bottom and solder connections on top (but with no labeling to let me know what was underneath). It looked like it would take several hours of work to get to the point where the PCB could be removed and flipped over. (Forget about "...let's see what happens if I change the value of this resister here...") I later sold the .22 to music store as part of a trade-in for a used Mesa/Boogie Mark IV (which was another big mistake, but that's another story...) |
