Re: Electar Tube 10 mod help needed...
I modded my E10 last night mostly using Bob Clear's suggested changes. Very nice improvement in the sound when using a MiniBooster. Very nice singing sustain. Even much better with the guitar going straight into the box. I should be receiving my Weber speaker in the next day or three so I can check out the big difference that this is supposed to make as well.

Two questions for discussion:

1. One of the suggested mods is to remove the 0.1uf cap that is right in front of the tone stack and just replace it with a jumper. How much of a change in the sound is that likely to make? Does this just let through more low frequencies since the circuit was better tuned up front to sharpen the tone? Does that C5 cap serve any other purpose besides restricting the low frequencies? If it did, it would seem to make more sense to just replace it with a higher value cap.

2. Looking in the E10 cabinet I was surprised to see that the front does have a small hole in it (about .75 inches), meaning that the closed back system is really a ported speaker. I wonder if it would produce any significant improvement to do the math and tune the port by mounting a tube of some to-be-determined length to the hole inside the cabinet. I would think that the tuning would affect the sound in the guitar's lowest frequencies. I think it would be counterproductive to explore just sealing the hole and seams to make an acoustic suspension speaker, since that would serve to dampen the speaker's response and require more power from the amp to drive it.
