Re: Marshall mods...adding value?
My thoughts are about the same as Trace's.
First.. i like the plexi..with just a few added
tone and gain setups. If you look at almost all the players that people like, they use some effects pedal to add the boost or different sound. Satch.. Eric Johnson..SRV to about any others. If you set the amp up to get the best sound you can.. then use whatever you like for the other sound. And for playing amps. I have seen some of the uglyest amps sound the best. So which would you want.. A new dull sounding amp behind you or.. a great sounding ugly one.Whats inside that counts for the sound. All the cosmestics are just that..It would be nice to have a like new vintage amp..that has the look and sound.. but you usually pay the price for one of these. So if you can find an old amp to work with or build.. its a great bargin to get.In some model Marshalls.. the chassis are drilled already for other inputs.. just its covered by the faceplate
Some 2203s are like this. they used the 4 input chassis for both amps. The only amps i would cringe if you see them drilled and hacked are the old ones.If you couldn't put it back to original,if you sit and look at something . there are ways around it to make what you want without destroying the amp.
Building amps now.. is not much different than the days when guitar building craze came about. All the kits and things.. and we saw many old fenders hacked to install a floyd rose,or kahler whammy etc..
Instead of just getting the parts you really wanted to build a guitar just like it. You can add some thigns to get a bit more gain, and change the tone to what you like,in a Marshall.Or maybe add a master volume. This is what i like.. Cause of the music i play. But if you like the flat out distortion sound .. you can do that too. thats the good thing about these amps,You can change them to get about anything you want. And Trace is right..the type music or sound you play .. and what you use should be considered..very,or most important thing.Get what sounds good for what your doing.
Then there are some that never find that.. they keep looking and trying everything. I remember playing a video for a guy.. and asking him to listen to the tone of Gary Moore's amps .. then Eric Johnsons.. he didn't like either one.It was like "well there OK".So you can't please everyone.
