| Richie | Re: I want your thoughts on Marshall mods.........when to just say no? I've seen this too Ben.. alot just depends on the amp.. and the person.I just picked up a early JCM 800.. and fairly cheap price ,cause it has a few extra holes..So i made it into a playing amp to go anywhere..Their are drawbacks, as you know to modding amps. Most people want an amp to have at least a clean and dirty sound. Adding another tube ..is not much different than just useing an out board tube preamp pedal. It depends on how much gain they want.. and if they want clean too.. or as they say, everything but the kitchen sink thrown in. You may put all this in, and then they don't like it for some reason. Adding caps .. and even diode clipping circuts..I think ..like you, maybe add a small board, without drilling or hacking the amp could be done like you posted.Let us know the exact model amp... and what they want in tone and we may be able to help more..just remember , if the guy does take it to someone else that does a hack job on it,and he don't like the outcome.. he may come back to have it reversed. I know Tim Swartz has a few great mods.. and heard his amps.. it just depends on if the guy wants a little boost or all out nasty.. I like an amp, that you just use the guitar volume to make it clean or scream.. give us some info and we'll all pitch in to help.. Richie{~}==::: |
