As you can tell, my knowledge is limited when it comes to the interworkings of Amps. I just got drunk, and got a wild hare... and started thinking about trying to build an Amp like the 8 double-stacks Nugent had when I seen him in the '70s (the ones that made me go 80% deaf [lol] -- I may be laughing, but that's serious shit (think I could sue someone over it?? :-) You're probably right, I guess I need to save some money (looks like about 4 or 5g's for an EL34 100/100, a preamp, and 2 1960 cabinets). Don't know what I was thinking?... -- build an Overdrive, and you think you can make anything!!  
 
About the EL34s creating the distortion, I got that idea from the following article:

About 7 paragraphs down in the section called "Guitar amp origins"  
It sounded to me that they're saying that EL34s give Marshalls their unique sound "distortion and crunchy"????
