Part of the problem with getting too mushy David is when someone just turns up the master without turning down the preamp gain. With the Master on 7 and the preamp on 3, you have enough gain on the SLO to play almost any heavy metal lead. It is that saturated.  
 
The other thing that affects it is which EL34 you use. I am using Svetlana EL34s which are pretty tight sounding all the way to max volume. Some Sovtek or Seimens EL34s would get pretty muddy in the same amp.
