Soldano HR50 amp hiss - what can you do?

JWK | Soldano HR50 amp hiss - what can you do? I finally got around to my HR50 again. This time armed with a handful of various NOS 12AX7 tubes, I tried them in different positions. All the piercing upper midrange is gone. I actually started thinking this amp could sound really good with a pair of KT66 tubes for the output. As usual, the best sound came with the master volume maxed. Best tone and touch response. Unfortunately, this amp has a lot of hiss with the master dimed. Not hum, just permanent hiss that doesn't go away with turning down the preamp or the guitar volume. Can anything be done? What causes this kind of noise in an amp? Thanks. John |
