Gord-
The first Weber book has 4 master volume circuits; one is basically the standard marshall MV type, the other three are after the phase inverter. If you're looking for overdrive at a lower volume, the first type will only work for you if your preamp alone generates enough gain to get you there. Many (most?) non-MV amps don't really create that much distortion in the preamp, but the other three designs will give you added gain from the phase inverter. Whether you'll like the tone of any of these is another issue entirely (NFB in your power amp will have a significant effect on tone with the post-PI MV's). I would say try a few, and see what works best for what you need.
Good Luck,
Tom
