The Doyle book 'History of Marshall' has the story of JM describing the Artiste as the worst amp he ever made. So I guess it's true.  
 
However, his criteria may not be the same as yours. Apparently, the Artiste was a (successful) attempt at making a cleaner sounding amp. To most people, however, it just didn't sound 'Marshally' enough, so it was a commercial failure. No wonder Jim didn't like it much.
